Bad leaders blame the plan when it stops working.
Good leaders adjust the plan.
Great leaders never confuse the plan with the point.
Every leader who has ever built anything tangible has stood in that gap.
Between the strategy on paper and the reality in the room.
➡️ The product that does not behave as the model predicted.
➡️ The team that does not respond the way the framework predicted.
➡️ The market that moved while you were executing.
Most leadership training prepares you to make the plan.
Almost none of it prepares you for the moment the plan stops being useful.
That is the moment that reveals what kind of leader you actually are.
The ones who struggle in that moment are not the ones with the worst plans.
They are the ones who confuse the plan with the direction.
The plan is a tool.
The direction is a commitment.
When the tool stops working, you adjust the tool.
You do not abandon the direction.
Under pressure, most leaders do one of two things.
They freeze, clinging to the original plan because abandoning it feels like admitting failure.
Or they overcorrect by pivoting so aggressively that they lose the direction entirely.
The leaders who navigate this well do something different.
They hold the direction firmly and the plan loosely.
They stay close to the real information.
They make small adjustments early.
They bring their team into the diagnosis rather than pretending they already have the answer.
This is what clinical decision-making under pressure teaches you.
It is also what I help managers and founders build.
The ability to lead when the map stops matching the territory.
If you are navigating this gap right now and want to think it through with someone who has done it across emergency medicine, startups, and boardrooms, my discovery call is open.
And if you want a room of people facing the same challenges every week, The Diagnosis Room is GBP 13 per month.
